About

Trusted Dental Filling Services in South Calgary

Do you see a cavity or hole in one or more of your teeth? It has been formed due to tooth decay, i.e. a bacterial infection in your teeth. If left untreated, the decay may reach the nerve of the teeth, requiring  root canal treatment or even extraction. The best cure for cavities is to prevent them in the first place, but we live in the real world and life happens.

When Do You Need Dental Fillings?

In addition to a cavity, several other reasons may necessitate using dental fillings as a reliable solution. Keep reading to know more about dental conditions that can be treated through a filling:

  • Cavities: The most common reason for a filling.  Our dentist will remove the decayed part of your affected tooth and apply a filling that will restore the tooth for a long time.

  • Fractured teeth: Teeth will sometimes fracture due to chewing stress or trauma (you wouldn’t believe how many times I have heard “I got head-butted by my dog”.

  • Discoloured teeth: Teeth discolouration due to high consumption of coffee, alcohol, and candies can sometimes be treated using dental fillings.  Oh, and remember those white fillings you had in between your front teeth 17 years ago?  They don’t last forever, and they stain and discolour.

  • Traumatic tooth brushing:  Stop scrubbing the sides of your teeth.  If you have exposed dentin due to gum recession, scrubbing that root with toothpaste a thousand times a year will carve notches into the sides of your teeth.

If you or your family are facing any of these dental issues, call or visit our dental office in South Calgary for efficient dental fillings. We will make sure that you get back your natural healthy teeth.

How Are Dental Fillings Applied?

To perform a filling, the dentist needs to remove the infected portion of the tooth usually while the tooth is numb.  The missing part of the tooth is then reconstructed with the filling material.  The most common filling material is called composite resin – think of a mixture of acrylic resin and very fine ceramic powder.  Composite resin (which is tooth coloured) is then bonded or “glued” to the remaining tooth structure to “fill” the cavity.

What is Cosmetic Dental Bonding?

The term “dental bonding” typically refers to patients who want composite resin placed on their front teeth to improve their smile.  The composite resin can be used to alter the shape, contour, or shade (colour) of the teeth.

While the process of applying composite for cosmetic purposes is the same as for a normal filling, they are technically more challenging to do and require more artistic ability (dentistry is an art and a science). This can be a more cost effective way of improving your smile compared to veneers or crowns.

When you get a new filling, the nerve of the tooth is irritated by the drilling and the bonding process and the tooth may be sensitive to cold or chewing for a short period of time.  This is normal, but afterwards, your tooth should be comfortable to chew with, you shouldn’t get food stuck in between your teeth when you eat, and the filling shouldn’t fall out.
